Sperry Shoes inspired by "man's best friend" Prince, Paul Sperry's dog. One winters day in the early 1930's Paul noticed his cocker spaniel running on the ice while maintaining surprising traction on the slippery surface. Paul Sperry turned over Prince's paw and observed many tiny cracks and cuts. Being an avid boater Paul immediately saw the benefits of Prince's non-slip paws. Paul Sperry, founder of Sperry Shoes, created the non-skid Sperry Boating Shoe in 1935 beginning the legacy of Sperry Shoes.
